Question: Should illegal immigrants be offered a path to legalization? Argument for the "Yes" side We have managed to construct an economy in which undocumented immigrants play an essential role. We can debate endlessly how this happened, and who if anyone is at fault, but the fact is undeniable. To attempt to deport them would be futile, and quite harmful to American business, including especially agribusiness. To leave them in the current state is cruel and invites exploitation. The only alternative is some path to legalization.
In addition, there are many children of undocumented immigrants who are American citizens. Penalizing these children by deporting their parents is cruel.
